A Perfect Fall Day Around Lake Tahoe

Off season around Lake Tahoe is an underrated time in the Sierras. For one, the crowds have dissipated and two, the vibrant colors of the aspen trees make the area come alive. Autumn is a beautiful season to experience Squaw Valley and the surrounding towns as a ‘local’s local.’

Here’s how we think a perfect fall day should be spent:

Get up at dawn and watch the sunrise come over the top of Squaw from the comfort of your suite. Hop on your bikes and ride along the Truckee River into Tahoe City and hook a right across Fanny Bridge down the West Shore. Stop at Tahoe House for a freshly poured frothy and strong coffee (one of the best you’ll ever have!) and don’t forget to try one of their traditional Swiss baked goods. The raspberry twist is a sweet treat, or the ham and cheese croissant will sustain you for those few miles back to Squaw Valley Lodge.

Want to check out some scenic vistas? Take a hike! Enjoy a short drive along Highway 20 toward Incline Village and stop at Crystal Bay (where the CA and NV state lines meet) for a one-mile hike up Fire Lookout. Click here for directions to the trailhead, and don’t forget to take photos of the stunning view!

Thinking about food now that you’ve hiked a bit and enjoyed the scenery? Drive just another four miles east into Incline Village, and chow down on a local favorite at T’s Mesquite Rotisserie (such a local spot they don’t even have a website). Don’t be deterred by the lines or the fact that it’s a hole-in-the-wall joint, just make sure you don’t miss out on their tri-tip and green salsa. Both quite addictive!

How to spend your afternoon now that your belly is full? You could take a tranquil kayak paddle on Lake Tahoe (check out Tahoe Adventure Company), or take a tour of the historic Thunderbird Lodge, or do some shopping along Historic Commercial Row in Downtown Truckee. The possibilities are endless.
